Ross Graham loves loud bands like Nine Inch Nails, and in his younger days he used to frequent ear-numbing concerts and crank up the volume on his headphones. He thinks it was a 2013 concert by the Reverend Peyton\u2019s Big Damn Band in Indianapolis that probably wrecked his hearing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI left and thought, \u2018Wow, my hearing is not going to be the same,\u201d Graham said. To fix the ringing in his ears, Graham, 52, has dished out roughly $7,490 for Starkey hearing aids through his audiologist. The hearing aids come with annual checkups and adjustments, free replacement parts and hearing tests.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Launched in September, the Silicon Valley tech giant\u2019s hearing aid technology is disrupting a hearing-aid market that has long endured the gaze of officials critical of high prices. The Food and Drug Administration recently authorized <\/a>Apple\u2019s \u201cHearing Aid Feature\u201d as the first over-the-counter hearing aid software device.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The chief executive of Minnesota-based Starkey, the United States\u2019 largest hearing aid manufacturer, said Apple\u2019s technology is no cause for worry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI like competition because that makes you better and the patient wins,\u201d CEO Brandon Sawalich said. \u201cYou push for better technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Sawalich and AirPod users say that Apple\u2019s technology increases awareness for hearing health and peels back the stigma of wearing hearing aids. In the United States, researchers have estimated that 1 in 5 people has hearing loss in at least one ear. But Sawalich said the technology doesn\u2019t compare to Starkey\u2019s hearing aids, which can translate languages and prevent falls; a pair of $6,000 hearing aids are a health care product, not a commodity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIf I need a knee replacement, I\u2019m not going to go ask, \u2018Who makes that knee? Can I get it cheaper?\u2019\u201d Sawalich, who wears hearing aids, said. \u201cI want to know I\u2019m going to do the best because I have to hear every day for my job.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
