These gifts always come with a side of diet culture, whether we realize it or not,\u201d according to Leslie Schilling, a Las Vegas-based registered dietitian who specializes in sports nutrition and disordered eating recovery.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk000q3b6mtolans2r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even when given with love and the best intentions, these kinds of presents can have undertones of \u201c\u2018you need to change in some way,\u2019 which usually lands pretty harmfully for the recipient of the gift,\u201d Schilling added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk000r3b6mitr6wykv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The risks are even higher when giving fitness gifts to children and teenagers. For adolescents, whose self-image can be especially vulnerable, a not-so-subtle instruction to increase exercise can hurt their mental health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk000s3b6mrss5fxns@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When parents convey a child\u2019s body is a problem, \u201cwe can see an increase in low self-esteem because there is this sense of \u2018I need to be different. I need to change. What I look like right now isn\u2019t good enough\u2019 \u2014 and that can go into eating disorders, depression and anxiety,\u201d noted Carolyn Comas, an eating disorder therapist in Los Angeles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk000t3b6mj1c6vi5q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For parents who feel a sense of responsibility to encourage an inactive child to get moving, it\u2019s tempting to think a fitness gift could be the perfect catalyst. But this well-meaning effort can backfire in several ways.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk000u3b6mrg240dxj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While gift-givers might assume they\u2019re offering motivation to be more active, surprising someone with a fitness gift can interfere with the ability to engage in exercise, according to Schilling.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk000v3b6m92k899ur@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFitness is very personal,\u201d she said. \u201cSupporting our autonomy is really important. And so when someone else gives us a Fitbit or a personal training gift certificate, or whatever it might be, whether we mean to or not, it takes away the autonomy, which is such a critical piece of joyful, sustainable fitness and health practices.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk000w3b6moi6bfit6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The irony is that giving unwanted advice disguised as a gift can make it harder for the recipient to feel like being more active. When people feel pressured, judged or bad about themselves, it ends up reducing their motivation. Giving such a loaded gift \u201cmight actually prolong someone from engaging in health behaviors because they feel hurt by it,\u201d Schilling said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk000x3b6mermyc8py@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If parents want to lay the foundation for a lifelong enjoyment of movement, turning exercise into something associated with dread or shame isn\u2019t the answer. For kids who aren\u2019t naturally inclined to participate in sports or other forms of exercise, \u201cthe best way to introduce it is in a nonformal way because when it\u2019s fun, you want to do it. And that\u2019s what we want all exercise to be,\u201d Comas noted. \u201cIt\u2019s not punishment but something you look forward to because then you do it for the rest of your life.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk000y3b6m4rlhghce@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This might look like inviting children to join in family activities such as nature walks, ice-skating or sledding \u2014 without any commentary about burning calories or \u201cearning\u201d dessert, Comas said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk000z3b6me4t6viqf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But what if your teen is the one begging for the latest designer yoga pants or cool wearable technology?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk00103b6mvzsdybl1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With trendy athletic clothes, Schilling and Comas agree it\u2019s generally a safer bet because athleisure has become everyday comfort and fashion for many people. But it can still be worth checking in with your teen or tween to learn more about why they want those items.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk00113b6mw5r4m8en@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Smartwatches may be all the rage, but parents should think twice even when it\u2019s on a child\u2019s wish list. Professionals who treat eating disorders strongly caution against giving these devices to kids.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk00123b6mtiv3s1oy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI don\u2019t recommend giving children wearables. Period. I think it is really dangerous,\u201d Schilling said. Because these devices track things such as steps and calories, \u201cwhat seems innocent can slide into obsessive thinking,\u201d Comas added. \u201cIt\u2019s like a little eating disorder brain on your wrist.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk00133b6mpmeb3lu1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even if your children insist they want smartwatches to communicate or because they\u2019re the cool thing to have, remember that winter holiday gift-giving<strong> <\/strong>happens against the backdrop of relentless cultural messages about upcoming New Year\u2019s resets and diet plans. Having all that data at their fingertips while being surrounded by heightened pressures to be thin can spell trouble, especially for growing kids.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk00143b6mkycabmp9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe know that dieting and weight loss can definitely be a precursor to someone getting an eating disorder,\u201d Comas said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk00153b6musuai08c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So if teens request a fitness product because they want to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/10\/health\/get-in-shape-summer-dangers-wellness\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">get in shape<\/a>,\u201d it\u2019s worth asking them to tell you more. There is a big difference between wanting to improve their athletic performance and feeling they need to change their appearance. What they might be really asking for is the gift of knowing they\u2019re OK just as they are.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk00163b6mgdxtwbd5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When in doubt, give something else, Schilling advised: \u201cIf you\u2019re unsure how it will land, don\u2019t do it. Because I\u2019ve sat across from clients who have never forgotten a parent or a spouse or someone who gave them a fitness or diet-related gift, and they\u2019re still sitting in my office talking about it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3rmnmwk00173b6mhqoor0h3@published\"
